Go Through All Of Your Habits To See If They Still Serve You Well

One of the things about the start of a New Year is that there is a lot of clarity that suddenly arises in your mind and your life about what’s important to you and what is not. This is the main reason why many people start going to the gym in January. Because they realize all of a sudden that their health and longevity is extremely important to them.

In my case, the New Year has always been a time of self-reflection, and going back to the basics. I am constantly prodding and poking at my schedule, and my habits to figure out if all of the different things I am doing on a daily basis are serving me or not. And the flip side of that coin is figuring out if there are certain habits that I should add into the mix, because it would serve me well.

I have a very rigid daily schedule that includes many different thing that help me become the prolific writer, and creator that I am. Without all of my routine, and rigidity, I wouldn’t have the time or the space or even the energy to create.

Based on my analysis of my schedule, the following are the things I have added and eliminated from my schedule. This will give you an idea of how this process works.

An Attitude Of Gratitude Goes A Longer Way Than Anything Else

Let’s chat a bit about gratitude using this story. There is a lot of construction going on in the place that I am living at right now. It’s low season and it’s a good time to get a lot of repairs and shit done. Which is great for the guests that might be coming in the future. But for people like me, who are living here right now, it’s annoying. I was speaking to an older gentleman about it recently, and he said something really interesting that I wanted to share with you.

He said that in his journal this morning, he asked himself what he had to be grateful for, and he wrote down, “I’m grateful for the construction noises, because it makes me appreciate the quiet even more.” He said that it’s all part of the plan. The universe wants to remind us over and over again that we have a lot to be grateful for, but as we are stupid or forgetful, we keep on forgetting, and thus, the universe has to constantly remind us of the same thing over and over again.

The same lessons coming at us in a million different ways. (more…)

I Don’t Want To Be Numbed, I Want To Feel Life Fully

  • Reading time:13 mins read

Recently, I was sitting with a couple of women friends of mine. Not close friends or anything. Acquaintances. People I want to get to know better, I think. It’s always iffy with me, because people tire me out so much. But it was a beach party, and I was sitting with them, and I felt like it was a good decision overall. I mean, I was being social. “Look ma, I’m out with people. Not in my room doing my own thing. Like a crazy introvert.” I really wanted to go back home and be on my own, but I was trying to be an adult. Trying to be normal. It was all going so well. Oh boy, was it going well. I was sitting and listening to them speak about how terrible men are, and how women are all goddesses. I nodded at the right moments, and empathized at the other right moments. Ah, we are really connecting, I thought to…

Flow State Changes Everything, From The Mundane To The Exciting

  • Reading time:12 mins read

Recently, I was walking around the streets of Chiang Mai, and I realized I hadn’t read a science-fiction novel in ages. I am a big science-fiction fan, and I love to write science-fiction, but its been a while since I picked one up. So I dropped by one of the many well-stocked used book stores in the old city of Chiang Mai, and picked up a few (8!) science fiction novels. These were really old ones from the early 90s or 2000s.

One of them, called ‘The Dark Fields’ by Alan Glynn was about this smart pill that gives you the mental acuity and the sharpness to be able to read hundreds of pages in a few hours, the joy and focus to clean up your entire life, and study a new language in a day or two, and more. It makes you healthier, happier, more accomplished, successful, well-liked, and focused. I mean, everything all of us want, right?

As I was reading the books, and reading all of the ‘symptoms’ of taking the smart drug (MDT-48 was the name), I realized something surreal. I believe all of the the qualities that we want, the ideal characteristics that we crave, the focus, drive, and motivation that we hunger for, these are all possible with flow. (more…)

Chiang Mai Is The Flow Capital Of The World

  • Reading time:12 mins read

I have discovered this fact about Chiang Mai, with a bunch of other dilettantes and I had to share. Why not keep the secret to myself? Because the people who are going to feel flow in Chiang Mai are the kind of people I want to meet. In reality, most people will not feel the flow quality of Chiang Mai and they will leave. This post is going to be all about what is flow state, and why I think Chiang Mai brings out that flow in me.

#FlowMo Not #FOMO

Remember when you were a little child, and you used to go on the swings. You would go higher and higher. And much higher than you could ever imagine going. Then, you would let go and FLY. For that brief moment when you were in the air, you were higher than a kite. You were experiencing the flow state that comes from weightlessness, and defying gravity.

It was easy as a child to experience flow, wasn’t it? I would get lost in almost everything I did for hours on end, experiencing the four qualities of flow state. Timelessness, Selflessness, Effortlessness, and Richness. You can read more about all of this in the book, Stealing Fire, by Steve Kotler, and Jamie Wheal. I highly recommend their book for a glimpse into how people are experiencing flow nowadays.

I am not going to speak in this post about how other people experience flow. You can read about that in hundreds of books. This post is about my experience of flow state, and how I deliberately put myself in that state through all of the systems I have set up for myself. (more…)
