Why A Life Of Time Freedom Is Crucial For Me

  • Reading time:5 mins read

There are many ways to live a life. There are many ways to not live a life as well. For the longest time, I felt like I was doing the latter.

Oh, I was breathing in oxygen, and breathing out carbon dioxide at a regular frequency. But I felt like something was missing from the equation of breathing in and out. It wasn’t like I was breathing in and out for some awesome goal in the future.

I didn’t want children or marriage, so what was I actually living for? Just to keep on buying a lot of useless shit, to put into a home that I barely spent anytime in. I spent all of my free time shopping, because I was so bored at work, that I needed to soothe myself with lots of pretty little things, that lost their shimmer almost as soon as I had purchased them.

I wanted to spend my time doing something else. When I poked and prodded at my heart, it kept on saying the same thing, over and over again. Like it was repeat. “I want more time. I want more time. Really, I want more time. I want more time.”

Thus, I Realized I Didn’t Want More Stuff Or Money – But More Time To Spend As I Desire

I already was living that life. You know the one. I lived in a fancy apartment downtown Toronto, barely keeping up with the bills, but keeping my head above water. Wearing fancy clothes, going out dancing with friends, getting drunk on extremely expensive cocktails, working all week, never doing enough for the boss, and having barely enough time to eat dinner, and fall asleep at night.

It was one of those lives. It looked sparkling from the outside in. Everyone oohed and aahed over it.

And for a little while, even I was enamoured by it. But thankfully only for a little while. Soon enough, I realized that I literally had no time to do anything I wanted to do. I had a hundred different things on my bucket list, and on my want-to-do list. But in between the 8-6 job, and the yoga class at night, and the meditation in the morning, I had no time to do anything else.

I’m serious when I say I have no idea what people with children do. How do they manage their time? I guess, they have no time to do anything else besides take care of their children. But, I sometimes would skip dinner so I could go to a yoga class, because I was feeling so stressed. I would go to bed hungry, because I didn’t want to eat too late, and also, I didn’t want to miss out on too much sleep, because I had to get to work early.

It was madness. I couldn’t do it for long. I really don’t know how people do it for years and years and years on end. Maybe I am a wimp, but I couldn’t do it.

Free Time Is The Most Precious Commodity Out There, According To Me

The main reason I moved to Thailand was not because the air quality here is great (it sucks), or the infrastructure is good (it’s passable). But because being in a country like this, allows me to reduce my expenses by ten times, which means that I am not working such long hours to pay bills just to survive. I am able to work shorter hours, make enough money to pay all of my bills and a little bit more, and then use the extra time to do what I want.

One of the things I always wanted to do when I was time-poor was to start my own YouTube channel. Also, I always wanted to take voice lessons, and art lessons, and self-defence lessons, and so much more.

With the additional time that I have now, I am able to spend my mornings working on the money aspect of things, and then my afternoons and evenings are free to do with as I please. I take Thai lessons, because I love living in this country and I want to be able to communicate with the locals.

Then, I go off to the half a dozen different classes that I am booked into.

Time Is Precious

And this is exactly how I want to spend my time on this planet. Learning new things, growing, meeting new people, eating delicious foods, having novel experiences. Not spending all of my time working at a job to pay bills that are as a result of that job.

I don’t know about you, but I hate the idea of spending all of my time at a job, working for someone else, lining someone else’s pockets, utilizing my youth, energy, and skills to propagate someone else’s dreams. If I am going to work hard, I want to work on stuff that matters to me, and brings me forward.

That’s basically the gist of why I left the corporate world. The reasons are varied, of course. Everyone has a different reason for leaving. But, for me, my precious time was being wasted in a way that made my heart hurt every single day. I couldn’t do it anymore.

This is my story.

How I Am Trying To Bring Conscious Shopping Into My Life

  • Reading time:10 mins read

I am truly now understanding the meaning of conscious shopping. There are so many things to think about when you are going to buy something somewhere.

First of all, plastic – are they using plastic or not, and if they are, is there anyway for you to avoid it. Second, are they using sustainable items, things that are compostable, or renewable, like bamboo, hemp, or second hand items, that are not going to use more resources. Third, are they using any animal-related products, to prevent all of the load on the environment.

The main thing about purchasing an item, is can you go without this item. Thats the biggest thing to think about.

It’s so easy nowadays, especially since there are so many stores selling cheap things, to say, “Okay, I am just going to buy this because, its so cheap, and if I don’t use it, I can throw it out or I can donate it. But it took hundreds of litres of water, and hundreds of acres of forest, and other resources to create this one item. You might use it once and then throw it out. But, it will stay in a garbage dump producing heat, and methane, and pollutants for a long time.

And all of this, just because you didn’t take the time to think, okay, do I really need this? Do I really, really need this? Can I go without it? Are there any other options? Can I borrow from someone else? Can I use something I already have?

We Can Deal With Stimulus In A Conscious Aware Manner

  • Reading time:4 mins read

Fear is a natural response of the body to any outside invasion or outside stimulus. We might be sitting there in peace, happy and ecstatic to be alive. The world might seem to be right where it’s supposed to be. Everything is exactly right. And then all of a sudden, disaster strikes.

Or at least we think that disaster has struck.

Everything is exactly the same in our outer world. Nothing has really changed. Every stone, every molecule, every breath is exactly the same. But we have changed on the inside.

Hundreds of chemical reactions are going on in the brain, to change who we are, and where we are going. We are having an almost automatic reaction, based on fear, to the stimulus, whatever it might be.

Without Time For Integration, All Healing Is Meaningless

  • Reading time:4 mins read

I’m part of this awesome spiritual community in Chiang Mai, Thailand. There are dozens of different modalities of healing being practiced by everyone almost at the same time.

I hear of my friends doing five or six Ayahuasca medicine ceremonies, and then going off to do a Vipassana Meditation, and then going to a Tantra immersion course, all in a matter of a couple of months.

When I hear of this, it actually really scares me. Not because these individuals can’t handle it. They can. They are strong, powerful beings, who are more than capable of handling anything that is thrown at them.

But, the thing that scares me is the fact that they are not giving themselves any time at all, to integrate any of the healing that is being performed on their minds, bodies, and souls.

The Job Of A Writer Is To Gather Sensory Information

  • Reading time:5 mins read

Whenever I travel through a new place, there is this verve of creativity that rushes through me. There’s this rush of feeling inside of me, that makes me want to write, and write. Then, write some more. I feel so ecstatically connected to that writer side of me in those moments.

Right now, I am on a Shinkansen train from Kyoto to Tokyo in Japan. It’s a 2.5 hour journey. Most non-writer people take it as a big waste of time. They are going to flip through their Instagram, or watch some show on Netflix, to get through those moments.

But for a writer like me, it is a cornucopia of delights to my senses. There is so much going on. I am on a train. A moving train. I just have to comfortably sit in my seat. And, all of the beautiful sights and scenes will move past me, at a rapid rate. Allowing me to indulge myself. I can see more of the world this way. I can know more of the world this way as well.

We Live In A Magical And Transformational Time

  • Reading time:4 mins read

I am sitting here in a bullet train going from Tokyo to Kobe, with my sister who met up with me from Toronto, and writing out a blog post, that’s going to reach hundreds of people over its lifetime. I feel so blessed, and I feel an immense amount of gratitude to be alive in this moment of time.

I’m sure things are only going to keep on getting better and better as time goes on. Technology will improve. People will change and become stronger, braver, faster, prettier. The world will surely transform in a way that I can’t even imagine right now.

But, in this moment in time, as I sit here, in this bullet train that’s zooming at speeds of more than 200 km/hr, I feel this sense of awe that I’m here and alive.

I know I probably harp on this over and over again, but this is something that I really want you guys to understand. Or at least experience not only second-hand from me, but also first-hand with yourself.

Meditation Is All About Unmuddying The Mind

  • Reading time:4 mins read

Whenever I think about all of the wonderful benefits that meditation has bought my way, I’m so grateful that I started meditating. I feel absolutely lucky to have discovered the practice of meditation so early on in my life (I think I was 28 when I started meditating).

I am forever and always discovering more and more reasons why I love to meditate. Every year, researchers are discovering new and varied reasons why meditation is so good for us.

All of this to say, that meditation really matters as one of those cornerstone habits that can absolutely transform your life, your body, and your soul.

But one of the primary benefits of meditation that has truly transformed my life has been the unmuddying aspect of it.

I want to use this blog post as a chance to explain my thought on what is unmuddying, and how meditation helps with it.

Go Through All Of Your Habits To See If They Still Serve You Well

  • Reading time:5 mins read

One of the things about the start of a New Year is that there is a lot of clarity that suddenly arises in your mind and your life about what’s important to you and what is not. This is the main reason why many people start going to the gym in January. Because they realize all of a sudden that their health and longevity is extremely important to them.

In my case, the New Year has always been a time of self-reflection, and going back to the basics. I am constantly prodding and poking at my schedule, and my habits to figure out if all of the different things I am doing on a daily basis are serving me or not. And the flip side of that coin is figuring out if there are certain habits that I should add into the mix, because it would serve me well.

I have a very rigid daily schedule that includes many different thing that help me become the prolific writer, and creator that I am. Without all of my routine, and rigidity, I wouldn’t have the time or the space or even the energy to create.

Based on my analysis of my schedule, the following are the things I have added and eliminated from my schedule. This will give you an idea of how this process works.

Mindfulness Gives You Time, And Time Gives You Freedom

  • Reading time:4 mins read

Why does mindfulness matter so much? Why is every guru out there, harping about meditation, and its benefits? And why is everything nowadays laced with this idea of being present and being in the moment? Is it really that important, this mindfulness idea?

I used to wonder about all of this, as you probably have. I couldn’t understand why it is so important for all of us to become present, and come back to stillness and silence at least once a day.

The more I meditate though, the more I realize what all of the fuss was all about. Ah, I see now, I think to myself, every single day, as the cobwebs in my mind get cleaned up, and I see more clearly.
