[Ep 62] Why Do Digital Nomads Love Chiang Mai?

  • Reading time:3 mins read

In this episode, I’ll be chatting why I think Chiang Mai attracts digital nomads to come over in droves.

I have been chatting with a lot of people about why they like Chiang Mai. Thus, the podcast, so I could put into words why I love Chiang Mai so much.

In reality, I got only a teeny bit of work done. But, I have met oodles of awesome, awe-inspiring, intelligent, conscious, and entrepreneurial people who have become my friends for life.

They are people who are constantly changing my mindset, who are helping me become a more complete human being, who believe in me and in my potential, and are my guardian angels and advocates in general.

These are people I met only a few months ago and already I know they are going to be with me forever.

This really made me ask why Chiang Mai brings all these amazing people together to form this awesome community within the bounds of this magical country. (more…)

Digital Nomads – Who Are They, And Why Do They Matter?

I dislike using the word ‘Underground Revolution’, because it makes Digital Nomads, DNs for short, seem like some nefarious rock band. But they are far cooler than that, in my opinion and that’s not because I claim to be part of that not-so-nefarious group. I think Digital Nomads matter in a way like most important revolutionary groups matter.

I have been speaking to a lot of people in mainstream businesses, and they have told me the same thing over and over again.

‘I first heard the term Digital Nomad (DN) a few months ago, and I had no idea what that meant.’ Or ‘I didn’t know that I was a digital nomad, until a few months back, when I heard someone describe themselves as such.’

What’s In A Name? A Rose By Any Other Name..

Does the definition of the group or the naming of it matter that much? Not really, unless you realize that revolutions happen because a group of people consider themselves to be part of a select cache, and are willing to fight for that group’s safety, and precedence. I don’t think DNs will have to go into battle anytime soon, but I want to delineate why the naming of a group matters.

I have spoken to many DNs, who became so before the advent of the internet. They used a fax machine, and snail mail to communicate with their bosses. They weren’t necessarily ‘Digital’ Nomads, but they were nomads and they worked on the road. These people would tell me that they had no idea that they were part of this awesome group of people who worked on the road, and were free to travel the world. It gave them a sort of belonging. They didn’t feel lonely anymore. They weren’t just cast-offs, or rebels, or outcasts. They were part of something bigger than themselves. It gave them a sense of safety and security to belong. How Did I Get So Lucky?

I have been doing a bunch of workshops for digital nomads on Shame, Vulnerability, Sexuality, Imposter Syndrome, and Creativity.

One big question comes up over and over again for people living awesome, amazing lives in Chiang Mai (CM). And I think for most people living awesome lives that are bigger and better than their counterparts.

What big question, you ask?

It is the question that affects all of us when we are trying to do something bigger than what we’ve done before.

These digital nomads say that they feel that they are really lucky to be living such an amazing, awesome, and free life. But sometimes (read: all the time) they wonder what did they do to deserve such good luck.

Why are they the ones who get to live such awesome lives? (more…)

What Kind Of Person Becomes A Digital Nomad?

  • Reading time:5 mins read

I have been meeting a lot of digital nomads on the road, and also a lot of aspiring digital nomads. From these encounters, I have realized not everyone can be a digital nomad. I am not trying to deter people from trying out the digital nomading thing at all. Everyone should try it out for themselves to see if it will work for them. Just like you can never really truly get a feel for a country, until you live in it for a few weeks, the same applies to the digital nomad lifestyle.

I find there are some qualities that define a person who is able to be a successful digital nomad (DN). Although these qualities can be learned, a lot of people who become DNs are already able to emulate these qualities with ease. I will mention some of them in the post. Again, just because you don’t have these qualities doesn’t mean that you will not be a successful DN, but it does mean, the path might be harder as you learn to embody these qualities slowly but surely. Stop Saying Digital Nomads Are Lucky! We are Badasses And We Made This Life Happen.

Do you know any badass digital nomads? I do. I am one.

So many people who come to me for coaching services, or everything else want guarantees before they begin. They want to know they are going to be 100% recovered, and making a six-figure income after they work with me for an hour or two. A little bit unrealistic, but not really. In this world of instant gratification, we all want to know that everything is going to be A-okay and perfect after an hour or two of easy work.

We don’t really want to put in years of hard work to make things happen.

Not really.

Opportunity Thy Name Is Hard Work

In my world, that is called opportunity. Most people will not put the work that is necessary to make things work. Whereas, I am willing to put in years and years of work into my business to make it work. Basically, my mindset is this business is me for life.

Even if it takes an eternity, I’ll be at it, because I just love the work that I’m putting into it.

I’m into the journey, not the destination.

But most people like I said come to me expecting big gains after a few hours of measly work, and when it doesn’t come up, they whine and complain. I don’t want to be a bitch about it, but this is the real grownup space, and you better fucking get used to it.

(BTW, If yon’t like the swearing – go somewhere else.) (more…)
