I Feel Like An Imposter – Everyone Else Seems To Know What They Are Doing

  • Reading time:4 mins read

Imposter Syndrome hits us all and it hurts us all. I hear over and over from my friends, and coaching clients, that they feel like they are the only ones in their circle who have no idea what they are doing with their lives. They are the only ones who are lost. The only ones who are searching. The only ones who are misspent. And the only ones who don’t have their shit together.

Everyone else they know is happy, well-adjusted, in a content relationship, loving their jobs, own a big house, and are steadily saving towards retirement.

They don’t understand what’s wrong with them that they can’t figure out this life business.

Why are they having such a hard time launching their adulthood?, they ask me.

Think Of Everything You Do As Seeds You Are Planting

  • Reading time:4 mins read

When an oak tree puts out acorns, it knows not all acorns are actually going to result into another oak tree. In fact, one oak tree can put as many as 10,000 acorns in their masting year. And statistically, only one of those acorns is going to take seed properly and grow into a fully-grown oak tree. If you think those are poor stats, I absolutely agree. (Btw, these stats are from the fascinating book, The Hidden Life Of Trees, which I highly recommend).

I actually use the same analogy for myself when I do my work. People ask me why I do so many things, and I work such long hours. There are many reasons for it, one of them being that I wasted my entire 20s drinking, partying, and being stupid, so now it’s my time to catch up.

But more importantly, I know how this universe works, and how the planting of ideas takes fruition. Out of the hundreds of things I will do in a week and out of the thousands of ideas that I will plant in a year, only maybe four or five of those will actually come to fruition.

You Plant Seeds Knowing Almost None Of Them Will Go Anywhere

That’s the delightful thing about life, I think. You never know which idea will take root and grow into something magnificent. And you don’t know which ideas will turn into duds, and wither away.

I have no idea when I plant my various ideas which ideas will actually give germ to something brilliant. And, which will result in revenue or any kind of impact. That’s why, I think of all of my ideas as little seedlings. I take the oak tree’s view, and just put out as many ideas as I can out there into the ether.

I don’t worry about where the ideas are going, or how far they are going to go. Or, even how fast they are going to come to fruition, or any of that. That’s not my concern. I have done my work. I have planted my seeds. And I have done the due diligence that was required of me. I will continue planting my seeds until the day I die.

Some of them might come to fruition after I die. Some of them might never come to fruition. And some of them might turn into brilliant stars that will shine brightly for the rest of eternity.

That is again none of my concern.

My concern is the work I put out there.

Get Up Every Day And Put Good Work Into Planting Seeds

That is our only concern as human beings – to put seeds into the ground, over and over again, day in and day out, and forget about the results. Unfortunately, we spent way too much as human beings, worrying about the outcome. Also, we have this thing that says we don’t want to put too much effort into something if it isn’t going to result in anything.

That means that unless you have an absolute certainty that your idea is going to go somewhere, you are not going to put any effort into it???! That is absolutely ridiculous. No one and I mean, no one has any absolute idea of where their ideas are going to go. Some ideas will be successful, most will not.

All we can do as human beings is keep on putting our effort into the ideas that come to us, planting our seed ideas, and then moving on. Do not wait to see if any of your ideas are taking hold or root or if they are turning into trees.

You do not need to worry about that. The universe will let you know automatically when one of your ideas is becoming successful. You have nothing to worry about. Rest easy, and keep on planting your seeds. The rest will happen as easily as everything else you are doing.

Just plant your seeds, the rest shall come. Or not. And it’s none of our concern either way.

[Ep 87] Do Your Business Your Way

  • Reading time:2 mins read

In this episode, I’ll be talking to you about how people tend to look up to and copy other people life strategies in hopes that they will emulate that persons’ success. I advocate the policy of modifying other people’s strategies to fit your own lifestyle, characteristics, and personality traits. That’s the way to be truly successful.

We need to do our own thing in life. Many people seem to think that if they follow the format that someone else is using to run their business then they will also become successful.

The problem is that just because one strategy worked for one person, that doesn’t mean that this strategy would work for you as well. It’s a hit-or-miss kind of strategy.

We need to stand out from the crowd, do our own thing and not be a sheep following the herd.

Podcast Content

  1. Following other people’s life formats
  2. My experience trying to use someone’s format for my business
  3. Follow your heart
  4. Your intuition is very important
  5. Make your own life format

When I first started my business, I felt like the only way I would become a success was to follow the path of other successful people in my field. After I while, I realized that even though the formats I had adopted for myself were good formats, they weren’t truly suited to the kind of person I was, and the sort of business I wanted to run.

It can be scary going off on your own and doing things differently than others, but it will make your business your own. And you may very well become the success that you wish to become, in your own way. You just need to follow your heart.

Our intuition is very powerful, and it shouldn’t be ignored. If your intuition is telling you that this is how you should run your business, then that’s probably the universes way of showing you the path you need to take. We should always go with what our gut and heart are telling us.

Life can be confusing and stressful enough, but if you just have a bit of confidence in yourself and your gift, then life will work out the way you want it too. You just need to believe in yourself.

[Ep 85] Change The World; Don’t Just Add To The Noise

  • Reading time:2 mins read

In this episode, I’ll be chatting to you about a quote I heard from the movie, The Glass Castle. Here’s how it goes – “Change the world; Don’t just add to the noise”.

I love this quote because there is way too much noise in this world. As a new business owner, I tend to hear a lot of noise. Whether it be from nay-sayers, people trying to sell me things or just other people’s opinions on how to run my business. Everyone has an opinion but it’s up to you whether you listen to it or not.

You must be critical of the noise around you or it can become very overwhelming.

Podcast Content

  1. Quote from “The Glass Castle”
  2. Be critical of the noise you hear
  3. Don’t put people on pedestals
  4. Shiny object syndrome
  5. Don’t be a source of noise

If someone is trying to tell you how to run your business, or how to do your meditation or work on your hobbies and they have little or no experience in that field, don’t feel like you must take their advice. You can be polite and listen to them, but don’t just accept their noise. Be critical of it and discard what you don’t need.

Don’t take advice from imperfect people. Take advice and noise from people you trust, people who are successful in your chosen field. Just because one person seems to be doing amazing and living the ideal life you crave; don’t trust everything they say. People can talk the talk, but when it comes down to it they are just adding to the noise. Don’t put people on a pedestal – focus on you.

Don’t add to the noise, do the work instead of just talking about it. Instead of wasting your time and energy and money on taking unneeded courses, focus on the work that you need to do daily in order to move your business forward. It’s hard enough avoiding all of the noise that is coming at you daily, don’t add to the stress by avoiding your work as well.

[Ep 81] 3 Lessons From The First Year Of Business

  • Reading time:2 mins read

In this episode, I’ll be talking to you about three big lessons that I learned during the first year of running my own business.

There are hundreds of little lessons that I have accumulated in the past year, some that I am aware of, others that I am not. I wanted to share the top three with you, because these are lessons that are transferable to all areas of life. Not just business, but everything else you can imagine.

Podcast content

  1. The power of meditation
  2. The joys of consistency
  3. The bounty of patience
  4. My coaching program

During the past year of creating and growing my own business, I’ve discovered just how powerful meditation can really be! Whenever I’m feeling stressed or any negative emotions, a short session of meditation can change my whole mood around. Meditation slows your thoughts down and lets you become conscious to the world around you as it is now.

It helps me calm down and relax, it shows me how much I have grown as an individual over the past year and how much of a success I’ve become. Success isn’t defined by how much money you have, or the type of car you drive, it’s how you rate yourself. Thus, if you feel like you are a success, then you are!

The second lesson I’ve learned is consistency. We need to have consistency in everything we do in life and especially in our business. You need to have passion and love what you do. This way you’ll be happy to do something to push your business forward every day.

The last and probably most important lesson I’ve learned is patience. You need to have a lot of patience when starting and running your own business. Some days you will feel like everything is going terribly wrong and your business is moving too slowly but that is ok. You need to let your businesses grow and learn and develop over time, it is something that can’t be rushed.

When running your own business, we all will learn our own lessons. We need to learn to listen to these lessons and grown and develop from them because once we do that’s when our business will be the success we know it can be.

Don’t Let The Internet Rush You – No One Is Posting Their Failures

  • Reading time:4 mins read

Recently, I read this awesome quote attributed to Wesley Snipes (on his Twitter account), and I instantly copied and pasted it into my archives of useful quotes. It’s basically the title of this post – Don’t let the internet rush you; No one is posting their failures.

Boom! Bam! Bing! Absolutely on point. As soon as I read it, I got goosebumps, and that’s when I know something that I am reading (or listening to or whatever) is important. That’s how your body’s intelligence tells you that something is important. It’s not a random coincidence that your body chose that exact moment to get chilly.

The reason I wanted to write a blog post on this topic was because it’s so relevant to all of us creatives and entrepreneurs out there. All we see are the success stories. All we see are those people out there making millions and smashing every business goal set in their lifetime.

Meanwhile, we are sitting here, making piddly amounts of money, hoping that one day, our work will pay off; someday in the far, far, far off future, perhaps.

Are You Focusing Your Energies On The Wrong Questions?

  • Reading time:13 mins read

I get asked this particular question a lot from newbie business owners, or people who are trying to set up an online business, and it always acts like a stumbling block for people.

The question being, “Should I build my business under my name, or under a random moniker, like you have done with The Millionaire Hippie?”

It’s weird to me, how this question seems to paralyze the people who ask it for weeks, months, or even years on end. I know of one friend who hasn’t been able to figure out the answer to this question, and it has been at least 8 years for her.

I want to tell you guys one thing, and only one thing (which is usually what I tell the people who ask me the question as well) – It doesn’t matter.

How To Create Unstoppable Momentum In Business?

  • Reading time:11 mins read

When I first started this business and brand, I did what everyone does. I started off by building a website. I went around the Interwebs and looked at all of the successful people in my field, and looked at their website. Of course, that was the worst thing to do as a newbie. I saw all of their amazing professional spick and span websites, and I looked at my starter website and I faltered.

This made me think, I am never going to get to where these people are at. I will never catch up. After I had that debilitating thought, I started working day and night trying to “catch up” with people who didn’t even know they were in a race with me.

Of course, I burnt out long before I got any further ahead. The lesson was, of course, to never compare. But also to take it as slow as a baby. Especially when you are starting out something so big.

Stop Hitting The Metaphorical Snooze Button On Your Projects

  • Reading time:11 mins read

Do you know what happens when you hit the snooze button in the morning? When we wake up and go back to sleep, we are actually going back into another sleep cycle, and then interrupting it over and over again. I had an ex who used to hit the snooze button twenty times in the morning before he finally woke up. I would be up with the first alarm, and doing stuff, and he would still be hitting an hour and a half later.

The reality with all of these interrupted sleep cycles is that we feel more tired, than we just woke up the first time around, because we are going in and out of sleep several times, and not really getting any true rest. Even though, in our minds, we imagine that we are allowing ourselves to rest just a tiny bit more.

I was thinking about this snooze button, and I realized that every time someone hits the snooze button on their sleep, instead of taking a few steps forward or even standing still, they are actually being pushed a few steps backwards. This is because they are going to wake up groggy and out of sorts, instead of being refreshed by their sleep. It’s going to take them hours to truly wake up after all of those missed sleep cycles.
