I had just come back from Thailand – it had been a dream trip. The trip had been absolutely epic. I had spent 3 weeks sitting by the ocean, under the sun, or the stars, contemplating the surf. No thoughts ran through my mind. I was calm, relaxed, and happy. I hadn’t touched a computer or looked at a screen for 3 weeks. My body felt the effects of it, too. I came back more flexible in my hips and my shoulders. I spent those beautiful moments with Harry. That was our first trip together. We danced together, and ate together.

I came back to Toronto and I had to go back to work right away, even though I was extremely jet-lagged. Although I was exhausted, I dragged myself to work. I had a 1-1 with my boss that Tuesday, and it wasn’t good. She wasn’t happy with my performance. I wanted to tell her right there and then to stuff the job and leave to go spend time with Harry. But I didn’t. I stayed and listened. I felt bad for being the person I am, who couldn’t work in a corporate field.

Then, Harry left on Jan 26th to go back to Alberta, and I had to go to work. I couldn’t even see him off to the airport. We had to say goodbye in the morning.

An Attitude Of Gratitude Goes A Longer Way Than Anything Else

Let’s chat a bit about gratitude using this story. There is a lot of construction going on in the place that I am living at right now. It’s low season and it’s a good time to get a lot of repairs and shit done. Which is great for the guests that might be coming in the future. But for people like me, who are living here right now, it’s annoying. I was speaking to an older gentleman about it recently, and he said something really interesting that I wanted to share with you.

He said that in his journal this morning, he asked himself what he had to be grateful for, and he wrote down, “I’m grateful for the construction noises, because it makes me appreciate the quiet even more.” He said that it’s all part of the plan. The universe wants to remind us over and over again that we have a lot to be grateful for, but as we are stupid or forgetful, we keep on forgetting, and thus, the universe has to constantly remind us of the same thing over and over again.

How Many Things In Your Life Are You Grateful For?

Do you live a privileged life? I can guess that you do. How can I guess that so easily? Well, you are probably sitting in a comfortable chair, sipping on some beverage, on a laptop, or a tablet, reading this article on the internet. (Have you ever tried a gratitude meditation?)

If that isn’t a privileged life, I don’t know what is. There are a hundred things you have that millions of people on this planet don’t. But, feeling gratitude isn’t about feeling bad about the fact that we are better off than others. That’s not we are doing here.

Gratitude is all about focusing on the positive things in our lives. There are so many positive things that happen on a daily basis with us. Hundreds of them, in fact.

But, as human beings, we have a laser-like focus on the one or two negative things that might happen.
