I Feel Like An Imposter – Everyone Else Seems To Know What They Are Doing

  • Reading time:4 mins read

Imposter Syndrome hits us all and it hurts us all. I hear over and over from my friends, and coaching clients, that they feel like they are the only ones in their circle who have no idea what they are doing with their lives. They are the only ones who are lost. The only ones who are searching. The only ones who are misspent. And the only ones who don’t have their shit together.

Everyone else they know is happy, well-adjusted, in a content relationship, loving their jobs, own a big house, and are steadily saving towards retirement.

They don’t understand what’s wrong with them that they can’t figure out this life business.

Why are they having such a hard time launching their adulthood?, they ask me.

Are You Feeling Like An Imposter In Your New Endeavour?

  • Reading time:3 mins read

When I first start anything, it might be an online business, or a new meditation practice, I always feel like I am the worst in that specific field. I am the only one in the whole world who has no idea what she’s doing.

According to Wikipedia, Impostor syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon or fraud syndrome or the imposter experience) is a concept describing high-achieving individuals who are marked by an inability to internalize their accomplishments and a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud.” As you can see, Imposter Syndrome affects high achievers and it affects them when they are doing a lot of things outside of their comfort zone.

I have noticed Imposter syndrome crops up a lot in the entrepreneurs that I meet on a daily basis, because they are always working outside of their comfort zone, and that makes them feel like they are constantly having to perform at a different level.

Everyone Feels Like An Imposter In Their Field

I have realized that everyone feels like an Imposter several times a week, if not several times a day. I get entrepreneurial friends emailing me on the daily telling me that they feel like a fraud, like they don’t know what they are doing, and they are feeling afraid.

Not only do newbies feel like that, but also, people who have been in the field for a long time. It isn’t something that stops affecting you after you’ve been in your industry for a certain period of time, or if you start earning a certain amount of money.

Entrepreneurs with million dollar businesses, or veterans in their industry still feel the ravages of Imposter Syndrome.

This is kind of a consolation to all of us who feel like we are the only ones who have no idea what we are doing in our field. If everyone is feeling this way, then we can just relax, and move on. We have nothing to worry about.

Imposter Syndrome Is A Guidepost That We Are Doing Well

In addition, because Imposter syndrome hits us when we are a high achiever, and we are moving out of our comfort zone, it means, that we are actually on the right path.

I think of it as a sign post or a message from the universe telling me that I am doing well, I am pushing myself, and I should keep on going. It’s a great message to receive from the universe.

It tells me that if I want to keep being a high achiever, and keep pushing myself harder and harder, then Imposter syndrome will be a normal part of my daily life.

But that doesn’t mean that I can’t do something to negate the effects of it a little bit, or to make it be not as harsh as it usually is. That is why I created this meditation for you to try out, and work with. It will help you realize what Imposter syndrome feels like and you can work through the feeling by feeling it deeper, rather than running away from the feeling by numbing yourself, or worse, feeling disheartened about the path that you have taken on.

Take a gander at it, and let me know how it works for you. I have used it myself for months with great results.

How Did I Get So Lucky?

I have been doing a bunch of workshops for digital nomads on Shame, Vulnerability, Sexuality, Imposter Syndrome, and Creativity.

One big question comes up over and over again for people living awesome, amazing lives in Chiang Mai (CM). And I think for most people living awesome lives that are bigger and better than their counterparts.

What big question, you ask?

It is the question that affects all of us when we are trying to do something bigger than what we’ve done before.

These digital nomads say that they feel that they are really lucky to be living such an amazing, awesome, and free life. But sometimes (read: all the time) they wonder what did they do to deserve such good luck.

Why are they the ones who get to live such awesome lives?

Doubt Is My Friend Now

In this episode, I’ll be chatting about the concept of doubt and how it will stay with you forever and ever.

It isn’t something that only occupies the unsuccessful; it is something that pervades every soul on this planet, no matter how successful they are.

Even the most influential people! People might be at the pinnacle of success, but they are still going to wonder, ‘Am I an imposter? Do I even know what I’m talking about? How did I get here? They are going to find out I’m a fraud and kick me out.’

[Ep 4] Stop Comparing Yourself With The Gurus – That’s Just Torture

  • Reading time:3 mins read

In this episode, I’ll be talking about one of the easiest way to feel bad about ourselves as new entrepreneurs. It’s called Comparison syndrome, that is, comparing your stuff to the experts who have been in the field years longer than you. These gurus have been slogging it out in the field for decades longer than us, but for some reason, we have this incessant desire to compare ourselves to them, and then make ourselves feel terrible about the comparison.

It’s the worst feeling on the planet, but for some reason, we love to torture ourselves with these comparison thoughts.

I’m sure you know what I’m talking about here. We see our website and then we see theirs, and theirs is much better. A lot better. Then, we see our e-Book and we see theirs, and theirs looks nicer, prettier, more professional, and the colours all match up perfectly. Even if nobody’s perfect you start thinking that they have to be the exception.
